Background of the Study
Academic publications in Nigeria, particularly journal articles, are vital for disseminating research and knowledge. Syntactic complexity—the degree of intricacy in sentence structure—is a key indicator of academic writing quality. Nigerian scholars often face challenges in balancing clarity with the need for sophisticated argumentation, which results in varying levels of syntactic complexity across journal articles (Okoro, 2023). This study examines the syntactic structures of Nigerian academic publications to determine how complexity influences readability and scholarly communication. By analyzing sentence length, clause integration, and syntactic variety, the research seeks to identify common patterns and challenges in academic writing. The study also considers the influence of factors such as discipline, author background, and institutional norms on syntactic choices. Findings from this study are expected to inform strategies for improving academic writing and contribute to the development of guidelines that promote clarity without sacrificing intellectual rigor (Afolabi, 2024; Chinwe, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the critical importance of clear academic writing, there is limited research on syntactic complexity in Nigerian journal articles. Most existing studies focus on content or citation practices without examining the structural elements that affect readability and comprehension (Okoro, 2023). This gap hinders the development of effective academic writing strategies and may lead to misunderstandings in scholarly communication. Without systematic analysis of syntactic complexity, educators and editors cannot adequately support researchers in improving their writing skills. This study aims to fill this gap by evaluating syntactic structures in Nigerian academic publications and offering recommendations for enhancing clarity and coherence (Afolabi, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To document syntactic structures in Nigerian journal articles.
  2. To assess the level of syntactic complexity.
  3. To recommend strategies for improving academic writing clarity.

Research Questions

  1. What syntactic features characterize Nigerian academic writing?
  2. How does complexity affect readability?
  3. What measures can enhance syntactic clarity?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it addresses syntactic complexity in Nigerian academic publications, providing actionable insights for researchers and educators. The findings will help improve scholarly communication and writing quality in Nigerian academia (Okoro, 2023; Chinwe, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to journal articles published in Nigerian academic journals.

Definitions of Terms

  • Syntactic Complexity: The intricacy of sentence structure.
  • Academic Publications: Scholarly articles and research papers.
  • Journal Articles: Peer-reviewed academic texts.
